They examined how the FBI and other federal law enforcement agencies have used their authorities to surveil the financial data of Americans in criminal investigations. Republicans argued this surveillance infringes on the Fourth Amendment rights of Americans and allege conservative groups have been disproportionately targeted by surveillance of this type. Meanwhile, Democrats argued law enforcement has the authorities for financial surveillance granted to them by law when there is a credible threat, and that Republicans are attempting to downplay the seriousness of the events from the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by attempts to discredit lawful FBI investigations.
