The House Administration Committee held a hearing on crime in Washington, DC, and the impact it has on congressional operations and visitors. Witnesses, including Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger and DC Police Union Chair Gregg Pemberton, outlined the causes for violent crime in Washington, discussed workforce shortages and morale in the Metropolitan Police Department, and overviewed ways that the Capitol Police partners with local police departments nationwide to protect congressmembers. In addition, they discussed concerns about repeat offenders, reduced sentencing laws, and coordination between federal and local police in Washington, DC.

The secretary, along with Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Charles "CQ" Brown, expressed the need for continued U.S. support of Ukraine and urged the passage of additional funding to aid in Ukraine's continued defense against Russia. They also addressed the Israel-Hamas war, reiterating the right of Israel to defend itself, but that it was critical to protect innocent life in Gaza.
Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, and Council of Economic Advisers Chair Jared Bernstein testified on President Biden's 2025 budget request and the economic outlook. Topics included funding for Social Security and President Biden's proposal to increase the corporate tax rate to 28%. At the time of this hearing, Congress was close to completely passing a federal budget for 2024, nearly six months after the fiscal year began on Oct. 1. This hearing took place before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, whose jurisdiction includes the Treasury Department and Executive Office of the President.
