U.S. Secret Service and local officials held a press conference on security preparations ahead of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. U.S. Secret Service Deputy Special Agent for Chicago's field office Derek Mayer, as well as Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) and Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL) were on hand to speak about the preparations which they say took a year of planning. Plans include security for multiple buildings involved in the convention process including the United Center and McCormick Place.
The DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee held their second virtual meeting ahead of the 2024 Democratic National Convention to vote on convention rules. Among the rules are how a candidate for president and vice president is recognized, required qualifications, and how the candidate for president and vice president is nominated. Committee members also discussed and voted on proposals. The 2024 Democratic National Convention is set to take place in August in Chicago.
NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy testified about the agency's final investigative report on what went wrong in the 2023 East Palestine, Ohio train derailment and how to prevent accidents like this one in the future. The cause was linked to the failure of a wheel bearing that overheated causing the axle to separate, derailing the more than 30 railcars. The NTSB chair, other rail regulators, and industry experts appeared before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines & Hazardous Materials. The 38-car train carried hazardous materials which caused it to burn for some time. Additionally, there were controlled burns. These fires released toxic chemicals into the air prompting evacuations, public health issues and environmental concerns. Rep.
