Hearing on Abuse of Pregnant Women in Prison

Witnesses included Jessica "Drew" Umberger, a former inmate who shared her experience of giving birth while incarcerated and the trauma she endured, as well as the mother of an inmate who gave birth to a newborn in a prison toilet bowl. Senate Judiciary Chair Dick Durbin (D-IL) described such experiences as punishment that was "cruel and unusual," referring to a violation of the eighth amendment of the Constitution. Ms. Umberger said, "our country, it needs to be better. It should be better. I was promised better." During his closing remarks, the subcommittee's chair, Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) said, "the United States goes around the world lecturing other nations on human rights, but how can we hear what we've heard today and accept that even basic human rights are being protected in our society?"

Acting U.S. Secret Service Dir. Holds Briefing on Fmr. Pres. Trump Shooting
37 minutesActing Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe said President Biden, the presidential candidates and their running mates would receive Secret Service counter-sniper coverage at all their events. This was a new change since the attempted assassination of former President Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13. Prior to this, sniper teams were provided via state and local law enforcement. The acting director said it was a "very fortunate" situation a Secret Service counter-sniper team was assigned to former President Trump that day because the shooter was taken out quickly. He also said that the decision to add the team was based on a threat assessment. He did not go into specifics about the threat as he briefed reporters in Washington, DC about the status of the investigation into the attempted assassination. The briefing was part of the acting director's pledge to congressional lawmakers to be more transparent to the public about the investigation.
