Supreme Court Hears Case Challenging January 6 Obstruction Charge
1 hour, 45 minutesThe Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to narrow the interpretation of a federal statute used to charge January 6 defendants with obstruction. The nation's high court ruling could impact hundreds of January 6 defendants' cases as well as Special Counsel Jack Smith's election interference case against former President Donald Trump. Chief Justice John Roberts authored the court's majority opinion. Justice Amy Coney Barrett inked the dissent. With this ruling, the case is also headed back down to the lower federal court for additional proceedings. The justices heard oral argument in Fischer v. United States back in April 2024. Joseph Fischer, a January 6 defendant who filed the lawsuit, challenged a criminal statute used by the federal government to charge him with obstructing an official proceeding during the Capitol attack.

President Biden Meets With Czech Republic Prime Minister
8 minutesPresident Biden held a meeting in the Oval Office with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala amid ongoing security issues in the Middle East and Europe. Czech Prime Minister Fiala reflected on seeing Russian tanks in his city streets as a child and President Biden reflected on his time as a Senator when he advocated for the Czech Republic to be in NATO. Both leaders tied their reflections to the role Ukraine aid plays in European security, with President Biden urging Congress to pass the national security supplemental to ensure aid to Ukraine.

When specifically asked about the Justice Department's special counsel report into President Biden's handling of classified documents and accounts of President Biden's mental fitness, Attorney General Garland said, "I have watched him expertly guide meetings of staff and cabinet members on issues of foreign affairs and military strategy and policy in the incredibly complex world in which we now face." He continued to say, "I could not have more confidence in the president."

House Presents Articles of Impeachment Against Homeland Secretary to Senate

U.S. Senate: Opening of DHS Secretary Mayorkas Impeachment Trial
29 minutesSenate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray (D-WA) convened the impeachment trial of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Members were sworn in as jurors and then signed the oath book. Majority Leader Schumer asked for unanimous consent for a time agreement on an impeachment trial resolution. Senator Schmitt (R-MO) objected to Senator Schumer's motion. Majority Leader Schumer then raised a point of order that the first impeachment article was unconstitutional.

Senate Majority Leader Holds Press Conference on Impeachment Trial

He went on to say, "we felt very strongly that we had to set a precedent - that impeachment should never be sued to settle policy disagreements." The Senate leader also touched on border security, saying Democrats welcome a "serious debate" with Republicans over border security.

President Biden Remarks on Manufacturing Jobs in Pittsburgh

The secretary, along with Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Charles "CQ" Brown and Defense Comptroller Mike McCord, appeared before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense to testify on the president's 2025 budget request. Secretary Austin also stressed the importance of continued support for Ukraine and the threat Russian President Vladimir Putin poses if Ukraine loses the battle. Other topics discussed included modernization efforts, submarine and shipbuilding, healthcare for servicemembers and families, and challenges posed by China, Iran and North Korea.
