Commencement Speeches: Pres. Biden Delivers Howard University's Commencement Address
32 minutesPresident Biden delivered a commencement address to Howard University's 2023 graduating class from the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC. He reiterated that the United States is enduring "a battle for the soul of the nation," and discussed "the poison of white supremacy," political extremism, and attacks on democracy as key issues. The president laterremarkedthat the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol was the first time in U.S. history that an attempt was made to stop the peaceful transfer of power, but that the attempt failed, and he and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris were accompanied by the Howard University marching band on his inauguration day, just weeks later. Ms. Harris is the first female and first Black vice president, and is a graduate of Howard, a historically Black university. Before the speech, President Biden was bestowed with an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the university's president, Wayne A.I. Frederick.

Campaign 2024: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Speaks at Iowa Fundraiser

After being introduced by Rep. Feenstra, Gov. DeSantis told the crowd of about 700 attendees about what he saw as his top successes as Florida governor, and about how he wants to take his approach of low taxes and increased support for socially conservative causes to national level. Gov. DeSantis then met and took pictures with many of those in attendance, as did his wife, Casey. Afterward, he participated in a photo op with Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds (R). When asked by a reporter if had any official announcement for a presidential campaign, Gov. DeSantis responded, "Stay tuned."

The plan includes an orientation gallery that features a restoration of Thomas Jefferson's library, a youth learning center, and a special collections gallery. Also, senators asked how the U.S. Copyright Office, which is housed under the LOC, will be used to protect copyrighted works amid growing use of artificial intelligence. The LOC is the largest library in the world and holds more than 175 million books, manuscripts, and other materials.
