Sen. Bernie Sanders Holds Press Conference on Debt Limit
25 minutesSen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) called on President Biden to invoke the 14th Amendment of the Constitution to keep the country from defaulting if the debt limit is not raised. Section 4 of the amendment states, "The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned." The senator went on to say though the 14th amendment is not a perfect solution, "it would allow the United States to pay its bills on time, and without delay, prevent an economic catastropheit should be exercised if necessary." Also making remarks were Senators Ed Markey (D-MA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), John Fetterman (D-PA), and Peter Welch (D-VT).

Rep. Garcia & House Democrats Hold News Conference on Expelling Rep. Santos
35 minutesRep. Robert Garcia (D-CA), along with other House Democrats, held a news conference on his resolution calling for the expulsion of Rep. George Santos (R-NY) from Congress amid admissions from Rep. Santos of making false claims about his past. Under Speaker Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) leadership, the Republican-controlled House was expected to instead refer the issue to the House Ethics Committee. The Democrats argued this move would be a "cop out," saying it allowed Republicans to avoid taking a vote against a member of their own party and that it was a delay tactic. Moreover, they said Rep. Santos has previously admitted to lying about numerous issues, and that Speaker McCarthy has already removed him from committees because of those lies. Rep. Santos recently pleaded not guilty to 13 federal charges, including wire fraud, money laundering, making false statements to Congress, and theft.
