Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) Chair Martin Gruenberg said the allegations of "pervasive sexual harassment" by FDIC regulators detailed in a recent article from The Wall Street Journal were "deeply disturbing and troubling." Testifying before the Senate Banking Committee on oversight of banking regulators, Chair Gruenberg vowed to create a safe environment for all employees and hold those responsible for any harassment at the agency accountable. Also testifying were Federal Reserve Vice Chair Michael Barr, National Credit Union Administration Chair Todd Harper, and Acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael Hsu. Several topics were addressed, including the strength of the banking industry, challenges for small businesses, recent bank failures, and proposed regulations on large financial institutions.
2024 Republican presidential candidate Gov. Ron DeSantis (FL) campaigned in Ames, Iowa, ahead of Veterans Day weekend. He spoke briefly about his own military experience, having served in the U.S. Navy during the Iraq War, and said he would take out "social experimentation" and so-called wokeness from the armed forces if elected president. Mr. DeSantis also discussed his other plans for the country and took voters' questions. He was introduced by veteran and Iowa state Rep. Phil Thompson (R).
Education Secretary Miguel Cardona discussed the department's priorities and workforce development efforts during the Western Governors' Association's winter meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Several topics were addressed, including investment in mental health services, funding options from the federal government for education investment, the education system after the COVID-19 pandemic, and accessibility and affordability of post-secondary education opportunities. He also touched on the need to incorporate technical and skills-based training for all students to prepare them for the careers of the future.
