The secretary said accusations of genocide against Israel were "galling," considering those who were attacking Israel, including Hamas and Hezbollah, were calling for the "annihilation of Israel and the mass murder of Jews." This was Secretary Blinken's fourth trip to Israel since the attack by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023.

Moreover, Secretary Austin was readmitted to the hospital on Jan. 1 due to complications from the procedure, and President Biden, senior national security officials, and Deputy Secretary Hicks were not aware of his hospitalization until three days later. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the White House had "complete confidence in the secretary," and that he took full responsibility for his actions.
