Justices Hear Case on Texas' Social Media Content Moderation Law
1 hour, 22 minutesThe Supreme Court heard oral argument in NetChoice v. Paxton, a case on whether a Texas law can restrict how social media companies moderate content on their platforms. The original bill, H.B. 20, became law in 2021. The new law included a requirement to notify a user if their content was modified and why. NetChoice, an internet trade association which included social media companies among its members, filed suit in federal district court to stop the law from being implemented. The district court ruled in favor of NetChoice but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit did not. NetChoice appealed to the nation's highest court and the justices had through June 2024 to issue a ruling. Florida passed a similar law, and it too was being reviewed by the Supreme Court in a separate oral argument.

Defense Secretary Testifies on Hospitalization

Supreme Court Hears Challenge to Gun Bump Stock Ban
1 hour, 33 minutesThe Supreme Court ruled 6-3 striking down a Trump-era bump stocks ban implemented in response to a 2017 mass shooting at a Las Vegas music festival. Justice Clarence Thomas authored the majority's opinion. He wrote, "a semiautomatic rifle equipped with a bump stock is not a 'machine gun' because it cannot fire more than one shot 'by a single function of the trigger.'" Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote the dissent warning of "deadly consequences." She said, "when I see a bird that walks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, I call that bird a duck." She went on to add, "a bump-stock-equipped semiautomatic rifle fires 'automatically more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger.'" The justices heard oral argument in February 2024. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) issued the ban in 2018.
