Matal v. Tam
1 hour, 2 minutesThe Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the government's refusal to register trademarks that can be seen as disparaging violates First Amendment free speech. This is a win for the Asian American rock band the Slants who challenged the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's refusal to trademark the name of their band because the name can be seen as a racial slur disparaging to people of Asian descent. The Court found the disparagement clause of the Lanham Act, a 1946 trademark law that bars the federal registration of trademarks that "disparage" groups and individuals, an unconstitutional violation of First Amendment free speech protections. Justice Alito in his opinion for the Court wrote, "The disparagement clause is not 'narrowly drawn' to drive out trademarks that support invidious discrimination. The clause reaches any trademark that disparages any person, group, or institution. It applies to trademarks like the following: 'Down with racists,' 'Down with sexists,' 'Down with ho

Packingham v. N.C.
1 hour, 6 minutesThe Supreme Court unanimously struck down a North Carolina law banning registered sex offenders from using social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter. The Court ruled that the law violates First Amendment free speech rights. In 2002 Lester Packingham pled guilty to taking indecent liberties with a minor when he was a 21-year-old college student. He received a suspended sentence, two years of probation and had to register as a sex offender. Packingham had a clean record until he was arrested in 2010 for celebrating the dismissal of a parking ticket by thanking God on his Facebook page. The post ended with "No fine, no court costs, no nothing spent Praise be to God, WOW! Thanks Jesus!" In North Carolina it's a felony for registered sex offenders to "access" any social networking website that is not restricted to adults. European Parliament Memorial for Helmut Kohl 1930-2017

The former leader died on June 16, 2017. Leaders reflected on how Mr. Kohl was instrumental in the the reunification of Germany and was credited for the modernization of the European Union. Helmut Kohl served as Germany's longest chancellor from 1982 to 1998. Other leaders including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Mr. Kohl's wife were also in attendance.
