House Veterans' Affairs Subcommittee Hearing on Gulf War Illness

A report released by the Government Accountability Office found that the VA denies more than 80% of claims for benefits in Gulf War associated illnesses. The report also found that ninety percent of VA medical examiners have no training on how to conduct Gulf War illness exams. Witnesses included representatives from the Veterans Affairs Department, the Government Accountability Office and veterans' advocates groups.

Senate Armed Hearing on Deputy Defense Secretary Nomination

John McCain (R-AZ) threatened to not vote for Mr. Shanahan saying his written answers on how to deal with Russian intervention in Ukraine were "very disappointing" and "disturbing." Mr. Shanahan revised his previous statement saying he supports equipping Ukraine with lethal defensive aid. Other topics included improving the defense acquisition process and prioritizing defense innovations. In addition, the nominee assured the committee that he would divest all ties with the Boeing Company.

Fed Reserve Chair Yellen Testifies Before Senate Banking Panel
1 hour, 58 minutesFederal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said she'd like to see a three percent growth rate for the U.S. but stressed that it could be quite challenging to achieve over the next five year period. Her response was to Sen. Bob Corker's (R-TN) questions regarding the president's tax policy agenda and efforts to increase the economic growth rate. This exchange between the two occurred during a Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee hearing. Chair Yellen was appearing before the committee to deliver the central bank's semiannual monetary policy report. This was her second day on the Hill. She testified previously before the House Financial Services Committee. Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID) chairs the committee while Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) serves as the ranking member.
