Google v. Oracle America Oral Argument
1 hour, 39 minutesThe Supreme Court ruled 6-2 that Google's use of Oracle's Java software code in its Android operating system was protected from copyright infringement under "fair use." The court, however, did not rule on whether the software code was copyrightable in the first place. The case can be traced back to 2007 as Google was launching its Android phone and used parts of Oracle's Java software code to do so. This allowed for app developers to create apps without needing to use new code in the process. This code is called application programming interfaces (APIs), which allows for different software products to communicate with each other. Java code was created back in the 1990s by Sun Microsystems. Oracle bought the company and the Java code in 2010. Oracle sued Google for copyright infringement. Google argued the parts of code they used were not copyright protected.
