Intelligence Officials Testify on Worldwide Threats

Scott Berrier testified on worldwide threats before the Senate Armed Services Committee. The committee's chair, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) invited Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts to testify at the public hearing, but he declined to do so in a letter. Those who did testify included former federal Judge and former Attorney General Michael Mukasey and former federal Judge Jeremy Fogel. Others testifying were a constitutional and appellate law attorney, law professor and a Campaign Legal Center representative.

Homeland Security Secretary Holds Press Conference at U.S.-Mexico Border
34 minutesHomeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas held a press conference after touring parts of the U.S.-Mexico border ahead of the end of Title 42, which allowed Border Patrol agents to turn away migrants on public health grounds. He said there had been a surge of migration ahead of that deadline, but said misinformation from human traffickers in Central and South American continued to drive migration toward the U.S. border. He said people entering the U.S. legally would continue to receive regular consideration of their applications for legal protection, while those arriving outside of official channels would face increased scrutiny of their asylum claims.

Two panels of witnesses represented lobbying groups representing larger agricultural producers and farmers growing crops like soybeans, corn, and cotton, and talked about what potential changes they wanted to see in a future reauthorization of federal farm programs. Legislators were expected to pass some form of a farm bill by the end of 2023.
