Senate Appropriations Hearing on Defense Readiness
1 hour, 45 minutesDefense Secretary James Mattis and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair General Joseph Dunford testified before the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee on the military's readiness and the upcoming fiscal year's budget. Much of their focus was on the impact budget restrictions -- many of them related to the 2011 Budget Control Act -- had on the U.S. military's overseas offensive and defensive abilities. Many of the subcommittee's lawmakers questioned the two Pentagon leaders about how various budget cuts would affect military installations or projects in their states, as well. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Mississippi), chair of the subcommittee and full Senate Appropriations Committee, said the subcommittee would return in a week to continue work on its fiscal year 2017 appropriations bill.

Supreme Court - Moore V. Texas
1 hour, 3 minutesThe Supreme Court ruled 5-3 that Texas used outdated medical guidelines in determining if an intellectually disabled person can be sentenced to death. In 2002, the Supreme Court ruled that executing a "mentally retarded" person violated the Constitution's Eighth Amendment ban against cruel and unusual punishment. In 1980 Bobby Moore was convicted and sentenced to death for shooting and killing a Houston store clerk in a robbery. After numerous court proceedings, a lower court judge ruled Moore intellectually disabled and ineligible for the death penalty. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reversed that ruling, citing the lower court judge's use of current medical standards in defining intellectual disability, not the 1992 standards set by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. The Supreme Court's decision reverses the Texas Court's ruling that Bobby Moore was not intellectual disabled. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) pressed Mr. Clayton on his conflicts of interest and potential recusals and asked how that would affect future SEC votes. If confirmed, Mr. Clayton told the committee he would not be able to vote on issues concerning his clients at his firm Sullivan & Cromwell for two years.

California Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) responded to his comments, saying it's still a free press and we can agree to disagree.
