The Center for Global Development held a virtual discussion on efforts to track COVID-19 data in low- and middle-income countries. Representatives from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO) and Vital Strategies joined the discussion on how countries that lack developed health infrastructure and reporting systems were able to track the spread of the disease. The panelists talked about "excess mortality," which tracks the overall number of deaths in a region relative to what would be expected under more normal circumstances, as a tool in estimating the lethality of the disease in areas of the world with an absence of widespread testing and reporting capabilities.
