Transportation Dept. Officials Testify on Infrastructure Law
3 hours, 40 minutesTransportation Department officials, including Transportation Under Secretary for Policy Carlos Monje and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Administrator Robin Hutcheson, testified on oversight of infrastructure investment during a hearing before a House Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittee. Several topics were addressed, including electric vehicle charging station infrastructure, the impact of speed limiters on large commercial trucks, high speed and light rail investments, and safety standard requirements for vehicles and crash mitigation. When asked about the recent recall of more than 2 million Tesla vehicles due to safety concerns with the autopilot system, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Acting Administrator Ann Carlson said Tesla agreed to the recall because "its software system may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse" and Tesla will be working on "remedies to address that problem."

U.N. Secretary-General Holds News Conference After Vote on Gaza Aid Resolution
20 minutesUnited Nations Secretary-General António Guterres held a news conference after the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution calling for more humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. He said neither Hamas' Oct. 7 attack against Israel nor Israel's retaliation against Palestinians in Gaza could be justified. He then outlined the elements needed for an "effective aid operation" for Gaza: security, staff who could work in safe conditions, logistical capacity for trucks, and resumption of commercial activities. Mr. Guterres also repeated his calls for a ceasefire, saying it was "the only way to begin to meet the desperate needs of people in Gaza and end their ongoing nightmare," and said he was "extremely disappointed" by Israel putting a two-state solution into question. While this news conference occurred, the U.N. Security Council's meeting was still in session.

Ambassador Greenfield on U.N. Security Council Votes Results for the Gaza Aid Resolution

Of the 15-member body, 13 members voted for the resolution. The United States and Russia abstained from the vote. "Today, this council called for urgent steps to immediately allow safe, unhindered humanitarian access," said U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield.
