Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell announced that the Fed was keeping its interest rate policy unchanged at present. He said the current rate of 5.25% to 5.5% was likely at its peak and that it would probably be lowered later this year if the economy continued to evolve as expected. Though he celebrated the overall state of the U.S. economy, Mr. Powell cautioned that the economic outlook remains uncertain as the Fed aims to lower inflation to a target rate of 2%. The Federal Open Market Committee, the body that decides interest rate policy, meets next on March 19-20.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris addressed campaign staff, supporters, and volunteers at the 2024 Biden-Harris campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware. They were accompanied by first lady Jill Biden and second gentleman Doug Emhoff, and campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez delivered introductory remarks. "We cannot, we cannot, we cannot lose this campaign, for the good of the country," said President Biden. This event happened on the same day as South Carolina's Democratic primary.
2024 GOP presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump spoke to reporters following a meeting with Teamsters president Sean O'Brien. When asked about the potential bipartisan border deal working its way through Congress, the former president said he hopes "the Republicans and the Democrats don't make a bad border deal because a bad border deal would be worse than no deal at all". The former president said he had a "good shot" at getting the union's official endorsement following the meeting. Mr. Trump's Democratic rival President Biden got the union's endorsement in 2020, and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton got it in 2016.
"We've got a long way to go before we make a decision" says International Brotherhood of Teamsters President Sean O'Brien following a meeting with former president and current GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump. O'Brien says his organization has not been in contact with former Governor and Ambassador Nikki Haley which O'Brien says isn't surprising given the candidates stance on unions. The meeting between the former president and the leader of the Teamster organization comes just a week before Nevada's primary election and caucuses.
