President Trump held a campaign rally in Toledo, Ohio. He spoke of several topics, including bringing jobs back to Ohio, the border wall, and rebuilding the U.S. military. He also talked about the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani by a U.S. military drone strike, asserting that the general was plotting to bomb the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad before he was killed. Introducing the president was Vice President Mike Pence.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), along with other Democratic senators and House lawmakers, held a news conference on U.S.-Iran tensions. They discussed the War Powers Act legislation and the role of Congress in declaring war. The members argued Congress holds the power of the purse and holds the power to wage war. Sen. Sanders said that he did not hear any evidence from the administration's briefing the day before that the killing of the Iranian was justified.
At her weekly news conference, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) reiterated she would not send over articles of impeachment to the Senate until she "sees the arena" in which House managers would proceed. She also said any effort by the Republican majority in the Senate to "dismiss" the articles of impeachment would amount to a "cover-up." The speaker also spoke about a resolution on the House floor to limit President Trump's use of force against Iran. The debate occurred days after the president ordered an Iranian general killed and the regime responded with missile attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq. The House later approved the resolution 224-194.
At his weekly news conference, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) responded to earlier comments by Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) that she would not send over articles of impeachment against President Trump until the Senate decides on the Senate trial rules. He argued, and quoted Democratic lawmakers, saying if it's an urgent matter, she should not wait to send the articles to the Senate. The minority leader also took questions on tensions between the U.S. and Iran as well as a House resolution on limiting the president's use of force against the regime. Mr. McCarthy defended the administration's briefing of lawmakers the day before and told reporters the resolution on the floor is nonbinding and is not enforceable. The House approved the resolution 224-194.
