House Speaker Pelosi Holds News Conference
2 minutesHouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) held her weekly briefing on the legislative agenda. She praised her colleagues for passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act the previous day and talked about the upcoming floor vote on a Washington, DC statehood bill. The speaker noted the record-high number of new cases of coronavirus throughout the country and sharply criticized the Trump administration for its handling of the health crisis. She said the country needs to prioritize testing, tracing and treatment in order to better contain the spread of the virus.

Hearing on Incident with U.S. Park Police & Protesters
2 hours, 45 minutesThe House Natural Resources Committee held a hearing examining the incident between U.S. Park Police and protesters near the White House at Lafayette Square on June 1st. Law Enforcement officials advanced on protesters who had gathered in the park to protest the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis. Shortly after police cleared protesters, President Trump walked from the White House to St. John's Episcopal Church to hold a Bible and pose for pictures with members of his administration. During the hearing a protester and a reporter, who were in the park at the time, claimed the protests had been peaceful and that they heard no warning before police began to advance on protesters. Jonathan Turley, a George Washington University law professor, stated it was unclear if plans to clear the park were connected to President Trump's visit to St. John's Church. California Gov. Newsom Holds a Coronavirus Briefing
1 hour, 12 minutesCalifornia Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) held a briefing on the state's response to the coronavirus pandemic, where he addressed the recent spike in positive cases in some counties. He talked about some of the reasons for the increase in positive cases, including more family gatherings, people socializing at bars and restaurants, and how the virus spreads in prisons. He announced additional funding to support those counties impacted by the spike, and also said guidance coming out later in the week would offer clarity on safety in bars and restaurants, as well as protocols when visiting nursing homes.

Arizona Gov. Ducey Holds Coronavirus Briefing

He ordered the closure of bars, gyms, movie theaters and water parks. The governor also announced that the first day of school would be delayed to August 17th. Gov. Ducey urged everyone to stay home if possible and if you do venture out wear a mask.

Supreme Court Oral Argument on Louisiana Admitting Privileges Law for Abortion Providers
1 hour, 1 minuteIn a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court struck down a Louisiana law requiring abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the facility where the procedure is done. Justice Stephen Breyer wrote the majority opinion joined by Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. Chief Justice John Roberts also in the majority authored a concurring opinion. Justice Clarence dissented along with Justices Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. The court heard oral argument in March 2020. Under the Louisiana law, physicians who violate it would face penalties including prison time, fines, losing their license to practice and civil liabilities. Prior to the law taking effect in 2014, the state's two out of six physicians who perform abortions filed suit and argued the law violated their due process rights and also their patients right to an abortion.
