Government Accountability Office Official Testifies on Bank Failures

Mr. Clements said that the banks engaged in high-risk practices, such as rapid growth and heavy reliance on uninsured deposits, which contributed to the failures. He further reported that regulators--the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and Federal Reserve--were able to identify issues, but did not escalate supervisory actions in time to mitigate the risks. Republicans focused on the latter issue, blaming regulators for the failures. Democrats instead drew more attention to the bank executives' mismanagement and Trump-era deregulations. The hearing took place before a House Financial Services subcommittee.

He said that anyone who arrives at the southern border after midnight will be presumed ineligible for asylum, receive a minimum five-year ban, and face potential criminal prosecution. Secretary Mayorkas then outlined new rules under Title 8 saying, for the first time ever, Mexico will accept the returns of Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan nationals. Title 42 was an emergency health order instituted by the Trump administration during the COVID-19 pandemic, which authorized removal of migrants who had recently been in a country where the disease was present. The general COVID-19 public health emergency also ended after May 11. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also took reporters' questions.
