She discussed how the Library of Congress (LOC) is creating an all-new visitor experience, in time for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. The plan includes an orientation gallery that features a restoration of Thomas Jefferson's library, a youth learning center, and a special collections gallery. Also, senators asked how the U.S. Copyright Office, which is housed under the LOC, will be used to protect copyrighted works amid growing use of artificial intelligence. The LOC is the largest library in the world and holds more than 175 million books, manuscripts, and other materials.

House Speaker McCarthy Holds Press Conference on Border Security Act

The bill passed ahead of the midnight expiration of Title 42, the emergency health order that authorized removal of migrants who came from countries where COVID-19 was present. The bill includes resuming construction on the U.S.-Mexico border wall, more funding for additional border patrol agents, new limits on migrant asylum seekers, and requiring employers to use E-verify on employees. Speaker McCarthy also addressed the impending debt limit deadline, saying he and President Biden would meet next week to further discuss it, and that their respective staff members were also working on the matter.

White House Briefing With DHS Sec. Mayorkas
59 minutes"Tonight at 11:59 pm Eastern Time, the pandemic-era Title 42 public health order will end," declared Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. He said that anyone who arrives at the southern border after midnight will be presumed ineligible for asylum, receive a minimum five-year ban, and face potential criminal prosecution. Secretary Mayorkas then outlined new rules under Title 8 saying, for the first time ever, Mexico will accept the returns of Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan nationals. Title 42 was an emergency health order instituted by the Trump administration during the COVID-19 pandemic, which authorized removal of migrants who had recently been in a country where the disease was present. The general COVID-19 public health emergency also ended after May 11. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also took reporters' questions.
