Rep. Santos Remarks After Pleading Not Guilty to Federal Charges
9 minutesRep. George Santos (R-NY) spoke to reporters outside court in Central Islip, New York, after being arraigned and pleading not guilty to federal charges. The 13-count indictment was made public in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, which charged Rep. Santos with seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of theft of public funds, and two counts of making false statements to the U.S. House of Representatives. He called the charges "a witch hunt," and said he would prove his innocence and continue to seek re-election in 2024.

She discussed how the Library of Congress (LOC) is creating an all-new visitor experience, in time for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. The plan includes an orientation gallery that features a restoration of Thomas Jefferson's library, a youth learning center, and a special collections gallery. Also, senators asked how the U.S. Copyright Office, which is housed under the LOC, will be used to protect copyrighted works amid growing use of artificial intelligence. The LOC is the largest library in the world and holds more than 175 million books, manuscripts, and other materials.

He said that anyone who arrives at the southern border after midnight will be presumed ineligible for asylum, receive a minimum five-year ban, and face potential criminal prosecution. Secretary Mayorkas then outlined new rules under Title 8 saying, for the first time ever, Mexico will accept the returns of Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan nationals. Title 42 was an emergency health order instituted by the Trump administration during the COVID-19 pandemic, which authorized removal of migrants who had recently been in a country where the disease was present. The general COVID-19 public health emergency also ended after May 11. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also took reporters' questions.

Government Accountability Office Official Testifies on Bank Failures
1 hour, 37 minutesMichael Clements, an official at the Government Accountability Office, testified on his agency's review of the Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank collapses. Mr. Clements said that the banks engaged in high-risk practices, such as rapid growth and heavy reliance on uninsured deposits, which contributed to the failures. He further reported that regulators--the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and Federal Reserve--were able to identify issues, but did not escalate supervisory actions in time to mitigate the risks. Republicans focused on the latter issue, blaming regulators for the failures. Democrats instead drew more attention to the bank executives' mismanagement and Trump-era deregulations. The hearing took place before a House Financial Services subcommittee.

Canadian Prime Minster Trudeau on US-Canada Relations
