The justice spoke about the importance of history and civil rights, and questioned why it has taken "232 years and 150 prior appointments for a black woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court." Also delivering remarks was Rep. Terri Sewell (D-AL), former Sen. Doug Jones (D-AL, 2017-21), and Assistant U.S. Attorney General for Civil Rights Kristen Clarke.

As part of the agreement, at least two dozen hostages were released by Hamas--including 13 Israelis as well as Thai and Philippine citizens--and 39 Palestinian prisoners were released by Israel. President Biden thanked Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu and the leaders of Qatar and Egypt for working with him on this deal over the past several weeks. He also said that more hostages were expected to be released by Hamas in the coming days, but didn't know when more Americans would be freed. In late October, two Americans--a mother and daughter--were released by Hamas.
